By Becky Walz,
The mats were busy late Friday afternoon and evening at Luther College as the South Winn wrestling team hosted its annual invite.
Featuring 13 teams, West Delaware came out on top with 236.5 points. Osage was second with 193, with New Hampton/Turkey Valley taking bronze with 171. Decorah finished with 148 points, good for fourth, while the host Warriors were sixth with 119 points.
For the Vikes
Decorah had two wrestlers advance to the championship bout. At 106 pounds, Gavin Knutson pinned South Winn’s Gavin Thuente in 24 seconds to advance to the quarterfinals against Lucas Peters of West Delaware. Peters was turned to his back in 39 seconds, setting up the title match between Knutson and Vinton-Shellsburg’s Eli Ollinger. It was another short match of Knutson in the limelight as the Viking won the title with a pin in 30 seconds.
Brody Hanson was the silver medalist at 165 pounds. He pinned Ayden Antonelli of Anamosa in 5:27 in round one action. Hanson then edged Karson Kolbet of New Hampton/Turkey Valley with a 7-6 decision the quarterfinals. In the semifinal match, the senior threw Garrison Gillihan of West Delaware in 3:57. He fell by tech fall in the finals to Osage’s Tucker Stangel, who is the top-ranked wrestler in Class 2A at 157.
Warrior big men
South Winn had three grapplers make it to the finals.
Class 1A No. 2 Collin Holm made his presence known on the mats at 144 pounds, winning the title via two falls and a decision. The senior took Anthony King of Starmont to the mat in 2:25 to advance to the semifinals. Vinton-Shellsburg’s Carter Lamont put up a fight, but eventually fell to Holm, getting pinned in 5:43. Battling Class 1A No. 7 Boden White of Denver in the finals, the Warrior won by a 3-1 decision.
Senior Aiden Feickert, ranked No. 12 in Class 1A, battled his way to the final at 113 pounds, throwing Jaylen Renfro of GMLOS in 58 seconds in the quarterfinal. Conner Bridgewater of Vinton-Shellsburg fell to the Warrior senior in 31 seconds, setting up a finals match between Feickert and Gavin Landers of Denver. Feickert ended the day with a silver, giving up a tech fall to the Class 1A top-ranked Landers.
Also in the finals was 215-pound Parker Timp. The Class 1A No. 12 senior made his way to the finals by way of pinning Rowan Sween of GMLOS in 1:06 in round one, the pinning Logan Baker of Omaha Concordia in 20 seconds in the quarterfinals. It took Timp 2:56 to get Ledger Nehls of Osage on his back in semifinals, but Class 2A No. 2 Braden McShane of New Hampton/Turkey Valley was too much for the Warrior as Timp lost by fall in the second period.
“There were so many good wrestlers and each backet was stacked with great matchups. I am proud of how our kids performed. We had three finalists and eight total placewinners which is a great day considering the competition we had. I was impressed with how we prepared for the matches and the aggressive nature we wrestled with. The guys were looking to score points and the effort was much better than what we saw earlier in the week. There were multiple State Qualifiers who were beaten out of this tournament so it just goes to show how tough these brackets were,” said SW Coach Jacob Elsbernd.
