After a rough stretch in its schedule, the Decorah girls’ soccer team (3-11) picked up a critical win over the weekend at Waverly-Shell Rock tournament.

Thursday’s rewind
Union (4-5) visited Decorah Thursday handing the Vikes their ninth straight loss of the season, 1-0, on a second half goal.
“Even though Decorah again came out on the short end of the scoreboard, I was happy with how we played this game. Union put intense pressure on us, putting us on our heels for long stretches. We played very good defense to thwart all but one chance that they were able to put away,” said Coach Loren Hendrickson. “Grace Bachelder made several excellent saves, backing up a fantastic effort from our back line. Decorah also was able to develop some good chances at goal but couldn’t find their way through for an equalizing goal. I told the girls after the game I was proud of how they played — with heart and better vision than in the recent past.”

At W-SR Saturday
The Vikes had a long day on the pitch Saturday, playing in a tournament at Waverly-Shell Rock and finishing the day 1-2.
Opening the day versus Bondurant-Farrar (7-4), Decorah struggled to keep up with the faster Blue Jay players up front, falling 5-1.
“They put a lot of pressure on our back line and were able to get some really good chances at goal. We had our opportunities too, but were able to convert only one by Kylie O’Hara,” said Coach Hendrickson.
Game two was a closer contest competitively; however, a first half penalty call put Decorah behind the 8-ball when Iowa City Regina (9-3) converted for a goal. The second half was similar, the only goal allowed being one where not just one, but three Viking defenders whiffed on a possible clearance rolling across the 6-yard box. Regina was there to tap it in at the back post for the 2-0 victory.
It was another evenly matched game three for the Vikes as they took on St. Albert’s (5-9) breaking their losing streak as they scored with about 10 minutes left in the game. It was Grace Neal who struck a long shot from the right side over the keeper’s reach, landing in the opposite side netting for Decorah’s goal and 1-0 win.
“Our defense held strong to keep St. Albert’s off the scoreboard for the final minutes. Nice to have a win to celebrate!” concluded Coach Hendrickson.
Decorah was at North Fayette Valley Monday night and will be at West Delaware Thursday, May 12, at 4 p.m.
