Decorah girls fall to Wolverines

By Becky Walz,

To open the season Tuesday, Nov. 23, the Decorah girls’ basketball team (0-1, 0-0 NEIC) fell to Class 2A preseason favorite Dike-New Hartford (1-0) at home 70-37 in non-conference action.
“I’m glad the girls have the chance to play an admirable team like Dike-New Hartford. You don’t know where you stand until you have played one of the best teams in the state,” said Coach Shannon Quandahl. “We have things to work on and a whole season to do it.”
The Vikes struggled offensively, producing 10 points in the first eight minutes and seven in the second frame. At the half, they trailed 43-17. Dike-New Hartford extended its lead in the third when the Wolverines outscored the Vikings 16-12.
Decorah was led in scoring by Yazmeen Whitsitt and Bryar Duwe, both knocking down 10 points. Sami Mount added eight points, while Kylie O’Hara had seven. Adding the final two points was Annika Franzen.
The next opportunity to see the Vikings in action is Tuesday, Nov. 30, versus Prairie du Chien at home. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. Decorah will be on the road Friday, Dec. 3, at Spring Grove at 7:30 p.m.
