Going into the match, the Vikings knew it would be a bit of a challenge. Coach Loren Hendrickson shared that nine of the Mustangs’ starters were club players who had been together for the last four years. That meant their communication and playstyles had been well-honed by the time the two teams met on the pitch.
Although the Mustangs had solid passes and quick touches, the Viking defense stood ready for them. Goalkeeper Grace Bachelder had a staggering almost twenty saves, with the three that went in being completely out of her reach. Coach Hendrickson also lauded the defense’s ability to communicate coverage on the ball and passing lanes.
When it comes to next steps, Coach Hendrickson shares some positives that can stem from playing such a locked-in team.
“We’ll get back to practice tomorrow and continue to try and get better,” Coach Hendrickson said. “I think our girls learned some valuable lessons today about what the game looks like when it’s played really well.”
The Lady Vikes will hit the pitch today (Thursday, April 14) to face Gladbrook-Reinbeck in an away game at 5:30 p.m. Another away game will follow on Monday, April 18 at Waterloo East.
