On the most beautiful weekend of spring, Decorah traveled to Waterloo’s Byrnes Park on Saturday, April 8, to compete in the Top Gun tennis tournament. Hosted by Columbus Catholic, this tournament presented the Decorah team with some of the toughest competition they will encounter until the latter part of the season. Each girl played a total of 78 games of tennis, and undoubtedly each would say the day’s competition improved their game.
Decorah finished third in team standings with 21 points. Columbus won the meet with 35 points.
The Vikes had two individuals and a doubles team finish second. In singles competition, at No. 1 singles, Annalise Skrade and No. 3 singles, Haley Gossman, took the second spot, as did No. 2 doubles, Evon Leitz and Klaara Short, also placed second.
“Skrade’s consistent groundstrokes and Gossman’s absolute hustle allowed them to control play. Consistent shots, capitalizing at appropriate times, communication, and positivity kept Evon (Leitz) and Klaara (Short) a step ahead of their opponents,” noted Coach Amanda Huinker.
The Decorah junior varsity team was represented by Kaitlyn Bjork in both singles and doubles and Camryn Holland and Jenna Hartz in doubles, dominated, winning all 11 matches played.
The Vikes will travel to Oelwein for a make-up meet on Friday, April 14, at 4 p.m.
