Competing back-to-back days, the Decorah girls’ wrestling team picked up a conference dual win Thursday, then took the title at the Fort Dodge Girls Invite Friday.
Thursday recap
Making the short trek to Waukon Thursday, the Vikes picked up a 48-27 win over the Indians with eight wins. Earning victories by fall were Ellie Adams (115), Ana Simon (145), Lauren Luzum (155), Naomi Simon (170) and Kamryn Steines (190). Receiving forfeits for Decorah were McKenzie Tollefson (135), Amelia Wadsworth (140) and Chloe Sheffield (100).
Friday tourney
Packing the bags for a long haul Friday, the Viking girls made their way to Fort Dodge and returned to Decorah as the champions with 194 points. Spencer was a distant second with 148 with Algona rounding out the top three with 136 points.
Decorah had five grapplers climb to the top of the podium, with three others in the finals, finishing runner-up.
Fourth-ranked Sheffield was the first to win gold at 100 pounds, first throwing Avery Williams of Clear Lake in 1:18 in the quarterfinals, then Aroura Preston of Spirit Lake Park in 2:51. It took the Viking 5:41 to put Kiara Ruiz of Spencer on her back in the finals for the title.
It was three falls for A. Simon en route to the gold at 145 pounds. The third-ranked sophomore pinned Algona’s Allison Trunkhill in 3:15 to advance to the semifinals. There she threw Lucy Porter of Fort Dodge in 1:06. In the final it took 1:51 for A. Simon to pin Perry’s Julie Maylum.
A quarterfinal-round bye put 155-pound Lauren Luzum directly in the semifinals against Elsie Hubbell of Humboldt, who was put on her back in 1:10. In 2:40, the seventh-ranked Viking got the fall in the finals over Emmetsburg’s Kylie Iverson.
At 170 pounds, top-ranked Naomi Simon continued domination with a trio of first-period falls. In the quarterfinal, the senior put Spencer’s Kiersten Campbell on her back in 47 seconds. Danica Diedrick of Humboldt was rolled by N. Simon in 55 seconds in the semifinal, with the Viking capping off the streak with a pin of Briar Blake of North Tama in 1:36.
Kamryn Steines also pinned her way to the top at 190 pounds. In 40 seconds, Steines pinned Humboldt’s Kennedy Robinson in the quarterfinals. The Decorah grappler got the shoulders of Gretchen Gorham from Algona on the mat in 1:55 to advance to the finals against No. 10 Kaylee Nachtigal of Spencer. It was there that Steines kept the perfect season going with a fall in 3:58.
Also in the finals for Decorah were Ellie Adams (115), No. 6 McKenzie Tollefson (135) and Amelia Wadsworth (140).
One more in 2023
The Lady Vikes have one competition left in the 2023 portion of the season as they host Holmen and Osage Friday, Dec. 22, at 5:30 p.m.
