Decorah matmen edge SW, Vikes/Warriors stomp Comets

It was senior night for the Decorah boys’ wrestling team as the Vikes hosted Charles City and South Winn for a double dual Thursday night, coming away with two wins. The Warriors split the evening, coming up short against Decorah and overwhelming the Comets.
It was a one-point victory for Decorah over South Winn, 41-40, decided on the last match. Landen Schnuelle picked up the first fall for the Warriors as the dual opened at 150 pounds, getting the pin in 4:49 over Kollin Henry. Decorah’s Brody Hanson got the Vikes on the board with a 17-3 major decision over Brady Ohrt at 157 pounds. Then it was SW with a pair of falls as Kyle Kuboushek threw Steven Munoz in 1:09 at 165 pounds and Quinn Huinker turned Bradan Darling at 175 pounds in 1:57. At 190 pounds, Decorah’s Thomas Sexton, ranked No. 8 in Class 2A, got fall points by putting Ray Lienau on his back in 1:49. Then it was Parker Timp’s turn to get the fall at 215 pounds as the Class 1A No. 8 wrestler pinned Kaiden Youngblood in 3:12.
Getting his third fall of the season, Anthony Putnam threw South Winn’s Kolton Brummond in 1:25 at 285 pounds. Class 2A No. 12 Gavin Knutson followed suit with a fall at 106 pounds versus Warrior freshman Gavin Thuente in 1:10. SW’s Class 1A No. 12 Aiden Feickert gave SW bonus points with a fall at 113 pounds, pinning Kelton Casterton in 50 seconds. Answering with a fall of his own at 120 pounds was D’mitry Lesser. The Viking threw Jamison Zweibahmer in 2:45. In 3:38, South Winn’s Bo Wangsess responded by turning Michael Clement in 3:38 at 126 pounds. Then Decorah picked up two more falls, taking the lead in the dual with Class 2A No. 6 Mason Avila throwing Parker Dahl in 1:19 at 132 pounds and Will Larson pinning Lukas Weiss at 138 pounds in 1:59. With SW trailing by five, Class 1A No. 3 Collin Holm stepped on the mat against Decorah’s Class 2A No. 10 William Fullhart needing a fall, but came away with an 11-3 major decision.
Sparring with the Comets, Decorah won six matches and received five forfeits to win 61-15. Winning by fall for the Vikes were Larson, Hanson, Darling and Putnam, while Avila and Fullhart won by decision. Receiving forfeits were Knutson, Casterton, Lesser, Sexton and Youngblood.
The Warriors won seven matches over Charles City and were given five forfeits in their 63-10 win. Huinker, Brummond and Weiss threw their opponents. Picking up decision wins were Holm, Schnuelle, Ohrt and Kuboushek, while forfeits went to Thuente, Feickert, Zweibahmer, Lienau and Timp.
