Decorah matmen find success on the mats

Competing back-to-back days, the Decorah wrestling team picked up a NEIC win over Charles City and two wins at a dual tournament at Center Point-Urbana Saturday to close out last week.

Competing back-to-back days, the Decorah wrestling team picked up a NEIC win over Charles City and two wins at a dual tournament at Center Point-Urbana Saturday to close out last week.

Conference dual
   After snow forced the postponement of Thursday’s dual at Charles City, the Vikings met the Comets on the mats Friday and brought home a win, 43-30.
   Decorah won five matches and had three forfeits Friday night. Mason Avila defeated Dylan LaPolice by an 11-0 major decision at 132 pounds. Following Avila up at 138 pounds, Kollin Henry secured a 6-2 decision over Jacob Vance. Keeping with the wins, Brady Stille pinned Nathan Lopez in 45 seconds at 145 pounds. At 160 pounds, Brody Hanson threw Colton Anderegg in 1:07 and Thomas Sexton got Carter Burkhardt on his back in 1:38 at 170 pounds. Receiving forfeits were Will Larson (120), Justin Fortman (126) and Braden Darling (152).

At CPU
   Center Point-Urbana treated the Decorah wrestling team fairly well Saturday as the Vikes competed in a dual tournament.
   Going up against some talented schools, the Vikings finished 2-2 for the day. The Vikes bested the hosts 48-24 and Oelwein 59-24 with losses to Vinton-Shellsburg 42-30 and West Delaware 58-15.
   Mason Avila had a perfect 4-0 day with two falls, a decision and a forfeit at 126 pounds. It was a throw in 4:58 for Avila against CPU’s Teegan Fuessley and Oelwein’s Karter Hardwick was turned in 1:13. The Viking later survived a 7-5 decision over West Delaware’s Jax Miller and received a forfeit against Vinton-Shellsburg.
   At 170 pounds, Thomas Sexton had a perfect day as well. Facing William Gerhold of Center Point-Urbana, Sexton earned a fall in 3:54. He later threw Westin Woodson of Oelwein in 1:24 and finished the day by pinning Garrison Gillihan in 4:23. He too received a forfeit against Vinton-Shellsburg.
