Decorah nets win on senior night

By Becky Walz,

On senior night Thursday, the Decorah girls’ soccer team (8-4) was perhaps a little late getting their heads in the game, allowing Dubuque Hempstead (3-11) their only goal of the game after only 60 second, but rebounded for the 2-1 victory.
With that shock to the system, the Vikings regained a little composure and started to claw their way back. Just a little more than three minutes after the Hempstead goal, Clara Rooney picked off a weak distribution from the Hempstead goalkeeper and wisely took advantage of her advanced position, lofting a shot over her head for Decorah’s first goal.
With under five minutes left in the first half, Abby Milburn kept a Dubuque clearance in play and fed the ball to Isabella Bishop near the penalty area. Bella made a move to avoid the nearest defender and put the ball in the opposite corner of the goal for the 2-1 lead.
The second half saw both teams getting chances to score but none good enough to change the final 2-1 result.
“Decorah’s defense was effective again, holding a couple of good Hempstead forwards to just the one goal. Grace Bachelder was also just as good in goal, stopping every shot that came her way after the early mental lapse by our defense,” said Coach Loren Hendrickson.
The Vikings played at Waverly-Shell Rock Monday in their final regular season match. Friday, May 28, Decorah will host Independence in the regional quarterfinals at 6 p.m.
