The Viking volleyball team opened the NEIC tournament Thursday at New Hampton with a pair of wins, defeating Charles City (12-22, 2-6 NEIC) in two sets by scores of 22-20 and 21-14 and Crestwood (7-23, 0-8 NEIC) 21-11 and 21-16.
Decorah was back on the court Saturday to finish the NEIC tournament in Waukon, going 2-1 and finished second. The Vikes took care of New Hampton (23-10, 4-5 NEIC) by sets of 21-7 and 21-17, then defeated Waukon (14-19, 3-6 NEIC). Sets scores against the Indians were 21-12 and 21-14. The day ended for Decorah versus Waverly-Shell Rock (40-7, 10-0 NEIC) with a 2-0 loss (15-21, 17-21).
“This was a strong tournament for us, we worked through some kinks of a new line up on Thursday night and looked much more comfortable with it on Saturday,” said Coach Gina Holthaus. “Saturday, we faced Waverly-Shell Rock and we pushed them, challenged them and competed with them. We bent them we just couldn’t make them break. I am proud of this group of girls. The last three weeks have presented some challenges with illness and injury and they stuck together and worked through it each step of the way. I believe that will make them stronger individuals as well as a stronger team.”
For the two-day NEIC tournament, the Vikings had 149 digs, 94 kills, 86 assists, 16 total blocks and served 179-for-190 with 17 aces.
