Decorah netters knock out win over Winona Senior

By Becky Walz,

The Decorah boys’ tennis team got its wish to have a match where the Vikes would be challenged up and down the lineup. Winona Senior provided that challenge and the Decorah netters came through in fine form with a 6-1 victory Friday on the road.
At No. 1 singles Gabe Anderson was confronted by an opponent that gave him very little pace until the Viking attacked and then his opponent responded with a heated passing shot. Anderson held his composure to defeat A.J. Appicelli, 6-3 and 6-3. Playing in the No. 2 spot, Caden Branum initially was a bit too impatient; however, he settled down and rolled to a nice victory over Caleb Ellenburg, 6-4 and 6-2. Daniel Skrade held the No. 3 spot and had the easiest time in singles, playing a very smart match against Tyler Kronebusch, winning 6-0 and 6-1. Luke Walter was at No. 4, picking up a sweet victory over Logan Monk, 6-1 and 6-3.
“Doubles provided a sterner test. Their three teams all played very aggressively and charged the middle of the net. It took a while for our guys to adjust and use better direction on their shots,” said Coach Reg Laursen.
Edwin Holyoake and Brendan Hunter came through with a gutsy, close third set tie-breaker win of Justin Brickner and Brady Fort, 6-2, 5-7 and 12-10. At No. 2 Noah Tapscoatt and Landon Baker, used a nice combination of passing shots and looping shots over the top to not be seriously challenged the rest of the match by Brandon Butenhoff and Daniel Feehan in a pair of 6-2 sets. Noah Spilde-Maki and Aidan Nalean-Carlson are new to competition and had a rougher time getting the direction they needed on their shots.  The pair were down 2-5 in the second set before mounting a comeback; however, it wasn’t meant to be as they suffered the loss, 5-7 and 5-7.
