It wasn’t the finish the Decorah track and field teams were hoping for, but the Viking tracksters scored in five events at the state track meet, held at Drake Stadium in Des Moines last weekend.
The Decorah girls finished 30th in Class 3A in team standings, securing eight points while Dubuque Wahlert won the team title with 59 points. In the boys’ race it was Pella claiming the crown with 80.5 points, while Decorah finished with five points in 33rd place.
Wet weekend
Thursday kicked off with the Lady Vikes in the shuttle hurdle relay prelims where Lani Hubka, Kallie Mincks, Anya Lovstuen and Isabella Knutson earned a spot in the finals in 1:08.41. Decorah finished fifth in Saturday’s finals, shaving a half-second off their time and crossing the finish line in 1:07.92.
Decorah had numerous other events on the Blue Oval Thursday including a 13th place effort in the 4×800. Combining for a time of 10:15.44 were Abby Halverson, Danielle Losen, Rebecca Anderson and Samantha See. Julia Alberts was in the discus ring, with a best throw of 105 feet 5 inches, good for 16th place.
Friday it was Chloe Reiser’s turn to throw in the Class 3A shot put competition. She finished her sophomore season in 20th place with a heave of 34 feet 4.75 inches. Knutson and Mincks were back on the track for the 100-meter hurdle prelims as well. Just missing qualifying for the finals, Knutson stopped the clock at 16.32 seconds in ninth place, while Mincks finished in 22nd place with a time of 17.14 seconds.
Three relays also competed Friday including the fifth-place finish by the 4×200. Joining forces were Sami Mount, Kailyn O’Gara, Brielle Buresh and Hubka in 1:46.21. In the 4×100 prelims, it was Brinley Krivachek, Knutson, O’Gara and Hubka just shy of qualifying for the finals in 50.54 seconds, good for ninth place. In the final race of the day for the Vikings, it was Mount, Mincks, Buresh and Halverson running the 4×400 and stopping the clock in 4:18.35 in 22nd place.
The weekend ended with a 17th place finish in the sprint medley Saturday morning in 1:54.53. Combining for the Vikings were Krivachek, Mount, Hubka and Buresh.
Decorah boys
Two individuals put the Vikings on the scoreboard during the weekend.
Individually it was Brady Hogan who finished sixth in the 3200-meter run Thursday in 9:42.56 and claimed eighth in Saturday’ 1600-meter run in 4:29.51. Also claiming an eighth-place was Jacob Pipho. The junior earned his point for Decorah in the 400-meter hurdles in 57.34 seconds Friday.
Joseph Hjelle came close to the discus finals with his throw of 150 feet 1 inch, but fell just short in ninth place. He also was in the ring for the shot put, hoisting the weight 48 feet 8.25 inches, good for 17th place. The only other individual on the track for the Decorah boys was Haywood Stowe in Thursday’s 100-meter dash prelims. Stowe crossed the finish line in 11.63 in 19th place overall.
Thursday Austin Wilkins, Briggs Duwe, Dakota Johnson and Pipho just missed the shuttle hurdle finals, finishing 11th in 1:03.41.
Four relays competed Friday as Cael Luzum, Kyle Renken, Bennett Schutte and Hogan posted a time of 3:43.45 in the distance medley to finish 15th. In the 4×200 it was Addae Whitsitt, Drew Snyder, Duwe and Stowe teaming up. Their time of 1:33.52 earned them 21st place.
Hitting the track for the 4×100 prelims, Whitsitt, Luzum, Snyder and Stowe came up just short with their time of 44.20 seconds in 12th place. Duwe, Renken, Trey McCain and Schutte each raced a lap in the 4×400 in 3:35.76. Their time placed them 21st overall.
