Decorah takes third at Flanagan Invite

The Decorah boys’ wrestling team was faced with some stiff competition last week as it took on Waverly-Shell Rock in a conference dual Thursday and competed in the Flanagan Invite in Cresco Saturday, where the Vikes finished third.

   The Decorah boys’ wrestling team was faced with some stiff competition last week as it took on Waverly-Shell Rock in a conference dual Thursday and competed in the Flanagan Invite in Cresco Saturday, where the Vikes finished third.

Tough dual
   It was an uphill battle all night for the Vikings Thursday as Decorah met Class 3A No. 2 Waverly-Shell Rock on the mats, recording just one match win to fall 70-3.
   The lone win was had by Mason Avila at 126 pounds as he survived the dual with Sam Hornyak for the 5-4 decision. It was a close battle for Class 2A No. 3 Brady Stille at 145 pounds who ultimately lost the battle in a 3-2 decision to Bas Diaz, who is No. 1 in Class 3A. At 170 pounds, Thomas Sexton gave Class 3A No. 12 Robert Poyner a battle to the 9-7 decision which fell in the Go-Hawks’ favor.

   The Vikings put on a heck of a show Saturday, finishing with 158.5 points in third place behind Crestwood (234.5) and Hampton-Dumont-CAL (185).
Decorah had two grapplers finish in the top spot.
   Leading the charge was Class 2A No. 3 Brady Stille at 145 pounds. Stille started with a bye in the quarterfinal round before taking the mat against Crestwood’s Ryan Wilson in the semifinals. The Viking senior took 1:50 to turn Wilson and advance to the finals. Stille held tough for a 9-3 decision to improve to 13-4 for the year.
   At 170 pounds, Thomas Sexton was 2-0 for the day to make his season record 9-3. He also received a quarterfinal round bye. Sexton threw Kaelin Crawford of Waukon in the semifinal match in 3:30. In the finals, the Viking earned the win by a 7-2 decision over Crestwood’s Tyler Pisney.
Kollin Henry placed second at 132 pounds to improve to an 8-3 record.
