Decorah takes two from Hawks in opener

By Becky Walz,

Getting into game mode, the Decorah baseball team (2-0) claimed a pair of non-conference games over perennial powerhouse Kee High (0-2) Tuesday night, 8-4 and 11-1.
“We are really pleased to pick up two wins against a good Kee High team,” said Coach Adam Riley. “While we did not play perfect baseball, our mental approach in our at-bats got better as the evening went on. Gunnar Steine was outstanding on the mound in game one and helped us settle into the game defensively after an aggressive start by Kee High.”
In game one it was the visiting Hawks who jumped on the board in the first frame to lead 2-0 as it took some time for the Vikings to settle in before getting on the board. Back-to-back walks issued to Kody Bodensteiner and Tyler Thompson opened the floodgates as Decorah scored four runs in the fifth inning. In the sixth it was senior Cael Luzum tagging the ball over the rightfield fence for a solo homer. The Vikings would tack on three more in the sixth inning to put the game out of reach for the Hawks. Kee High battled back in the seventh to score twice, but would fall short, 8-4
Steine was on the hill for just over four innings, allowing one run on two hits and one walk while striking out four to earn the win. In all Decorah collected nine hits and had five stolen bases.
The Decorah bats were dialed in as game two got underway with the Vikes scoring three runs in the first inning. The five-run second frame was highlighted by a three-run bomb over the left field fence by Noah Storts. After three additional runs crossed home plate in the third, it was up to the Vikings to hold off the Hawks, ending the game in five innings by the 10-run rule.
Picking up the win was James Marx with Cai Brevig and Storts throwing in relief. Decorah had nine hits, with Keenan Tyler picked up five RBI in the contest.
