Decorah to open regionals Friday

By Becky Walz,

Taking to the pitch for the final regular season, the Decorah girls’ soccer team (8-5) faced a formidable opponent in Waverly-Shell Rock (14-2) Monday on the road, dropping the contest 10-0 by the walkover rule.
The Go-Hawks got off to a great start at the Vikes’ expense, scoring the first goal of the game 24 seconds after the opening whistle. Decorah’s defense got caught lunging at a ball and the W-SR attacker took full advantage, escaping around the edge and putting the ball low inside the near post. The Viking defense recovered after the initial shock and kept the formidable Go-Hawk offense off the board for a while, but the relentless pressure eventually paid off again.
“We tried to keep them at bay the best we could, but they have so many weapons it’s not a fair fight. We were fortunate to keep them to four goals in the first half. Grace Bachelder made a number of spectacular saves but couldn’t keep them all out. The second half was more of the same. Eventually our girls tired and made mistakes that allowed their best goal scorer to get wide open shots. She made enough of them to eventually end the game with about seven minutes remaining by the walkover rule,” explained Coach Loren Hendrickson.
Decorah will begin the postseason in Class 2A Region 6 play as host to Independence (4-13) Friday, May 28 at 6 p.m.
