By Becky Walz,
Like most squads in northeast Iowa, the Decorah football team was unable to take the field Friday night for its opener and opted for the Saturday morning contest at Crestwood instead. When the game finally got rolling Saturday, it was the Vikings setting the pace and claiming the 41-14 victory.
On the first possession of the game, Noah Storts broke free for a 69-yard reception touchdown. For good measure, Brody Young tacked on a 44-yard field goal to give Decorah an early 10-0 lead after the first quarter. The Vikings kept the pressure on as Ben Wymer hauled in an interception near midfield as the quarter was closing in on its final seconds.
Keenan Tyler and Brody Young each had a touchdown in the second with a 26-yard carry by Tyler and 42-yard dart from Young. A 33-yard field goal by Young pushed Decorah ahead 27-0 at halftime.
The Vikings started the second half by pinning the Cadets deep in their own territory and taking over on downs at the Crestwood 4-yard line, setting up the easy run by Young to put yet another tally on the board for Decorah. The Cadets finally got on the board in the third quarter after going 36 yards in five plays. Wymer would tack on another TD for the Vikes late in the third as Crestwood completed the scoring in the fourth.
In the stat book
