The Decorah defense did its job Tuesday night as the Viking girls’ basketball team (4-3, 2-0 NEIC) took care of Crestwood (2-5, 0-1 NEIC) on the road 47-28.
Decorah never trailed Tuesday night as Yazmeen Whitsitt pulled the trigger on a trio of three-pointers to open up the game. By the end of the first quarter, the senior had scored 16 of the Vikings’ points as the Cadets trailed the visitors, 22-6. In the early going of the second period, Gabby Dixon popped a trey to get in on the long-ball action, helping Decorah to a 31-15 halftime advantage.
Crestwood outscored the Vikes 9-2 in the third quarter, before Decorah finished the game on cruise control which included a four-point play by Claire Storhoff. Midway through the final period the freshman was fouled on a three-pointer that fell through the net and followed it with a swish from the free throw line.
Individual stats were unavailable at press time.
With one week until the holiday break, Decorah will host New Hampton in NEIC action Friday, Dec. 15, at 6:45 p.m., then squares off with Caledonia in the Border Battle Saturday, Dec. 16, on the courts at Luther College at 7:30 p.m. The Vikes will be at Waukon Tuesday, Dec. 19, at 6:15 p.m., before finishing the 2023 portion of the season at Hudson Thursday, Dec. 21, at 6 p.m.
