DHPT to host Buckthorn Blitz January and February events

Decorah Human Powered Trails (DHPT) has recently been helping manage invasive buckthorn species in Barbara Barnhart Van Peenen Memorial Park. For over 20 years, DHPT has been a partner of Decorah Parks and Recreation in building and maintaining Decorah’s single track trail systems. Two volunteer workdays have already occurred since the Fall of 2023, with professional instruction guiding volunteers in order to cut and properly eliminate Buckthorn from Van Peenen Park.
Management and removal of Buckthorn is important for the health of local park systems. Since buckthorn is an invasive species it will outcompete native plants and suppress the growth of tree seedlings, and also reduces habitat quality for wildlife.
Volunteers are welcome to get involved with upcoming Buckthorn Blitz days. The work is relatively simple, with no prior experience needed. Winter work clothing, good footwear, and a water bottle are necessary, with layering suggested to adjust to activity levels.
Upcoming workdays are Saturday, Jan. 6 and Saturday, Feb. 3, at Van Peenen Park in Decorah. Both events will start at 12:30 p.m., and volunteers are welcome to join for part of the time. The group will meet at the main entrance to Van Peenen park on Quarry Hill Road at the top hill parking area by the quarry.
