Winning the first-ever conference tournament in 2019, the Decorah boys’ tennis team is looking to defend its title in 2021, after the pandemic ended the 2020 season almost before it began.
However, it will be new faces taking the court this season, with just two returning letter winners on the roster.
Leading the way is Head Coach Reg Laursen, who is in his 21st year with the program. He will be assisted by Matt Anderson, Brett Wilker and Mirian Skrade.
A look back
The 2019 season was also highlighted by Billy Lange and Aidan Hunter qualifying for state in doubles but falling in the consolation bracket. At the conclusion of the season Lange and Hayden graduated from the squad, leaving behind talent, however four athletes were unable to compete in their senior season and make some noise. Lost to graduation in 2020 were Aidan Hunter, Joe Holland, Kaj Spencer-Berg and Rex Huinker.
A new team
Laursen will have two athletes back with a letter under their belts. Leading the way are seniors Gabe Anderson and Edwin Holyoake.
With the senior duo paving the way, Laursen believes junior Brendan Hunter, sophomore Daniel Skrade and freshman Caden Branum are the next three to fill the top five spots. The order of play of the top five is still to be determined as they get set to open the season.
“Following those five is a group of six who have real promise, though not a complete skill set. I have high hopes that some or all of them will significantly improve with lots of playing time,” said Laursen. “We need one of our less experienced guys to improve to be a solid sixth man.”
The veteran coach noted the Vikings also play three matches in Minnesota and Wisconsin, where the team needs 10 players to compete in a varsity match.
“This will provide an opportunity for guys who work hard help the team,” offered Laursen. “We also have some strong teams in our district who will give the guys stiff competition in postseason play.
Overall outlook
On paper, it looks to be Waterloo Columbus who is an immediate problem in the Vikings’ district, as is Dubuque Wahlert and Cedar Rapids Xavier.
“We play four very good teams from Minnesota and Wisconsin, as well as Columbus and Mason City in Iowa. It will be an upset if we beat any of these schools, hence our win-loss record will not be great,” said Laursen. “We should fare much better against our other Iowa competitors. I like the attitude and degree of hunger of this squad and am looking forward to a fun season.”
