Edgewood-Colesburg nearly took down a higher seed again in the postseason, after defeating Turkey Valley in overtime Monday night. This time, however, it was South Winn (15-8) who was the target in the Class 1A District 6 semifinal and the game ended in double overtime in the Warriors’ favor 65-60.
Ed-Co ends the year 5-18, while the Warriors turn attention to prepping for their third matchup of the season against No. 10 Kee (20-2) in the district final Tuesday, Feb. 20, in Waukon at 7 p.m.
It was a close race from the get-go with the two teams tied 19-all with 1:53 remaining in the first half. South Winn closed out the half on a 6-0 run that included a pair of Carson Streeter free throws and back-to-back baskets by Matson Winings who capped off the second quarter with a dunk with 22 ticks on the clock. At the break, the Warriors led 25-19.
South Winn led by as many as 10 points in the early going of the third quarter and maintained the 40-35 advantage with eight minutes remaining in regulation. Ed-Co wasn’t going to take it lying down as they pulled ahead of the Warriors 43-42 by midway of the fourth period. A Braiden Todd basked, combined with Kole Hageman’s three-pointer pulled the Warriors back on top 47-43 with 3:46 left to play. Ed-Co once again put the brakes on the game as the Vikings rallied for four points in the final two minutes to knot the score 49-49 at the buzzer.
In the first overtime, free throws were crucial as the Warriors were 2-of-4 from the charity stripe while Ed-Co was 2-for-2 with 3.4 seconds on the clock to tie it once again 53-53 and send the game into a second overtime. It was Todd who carried much of the burden of scoring with six of the Warriors’ 11 points that helped capture the South Winn victory 65-60.
