Dugger puts in winning goal in OT

By Becky Walz,

Two postponements and nearly after a month of waiting to play each other, the Decorah and Clayton Ridge girls soccer teams finally met on the pitch Monday in Guttenberg in a game that came down to overtime. The win went to the Vikes, 2-1.
After a scoreless first half where Decorah had the majority of the possession and the majority of chances at goal, the Viking girls scored early in the second half to take a 1-0 lead. It came after a corner kick by Decorah that was deflected once or twice, but landed at the feet of Ella Grouws, who sent the ball over the goal line.
There were several more chances in the second half, but none found their way past the Clayton Ridge goalkeeper.  With about 2:30 minutes to go in the game, Clayton Ridge put a high ball into the box that squirted through the Viking goalkeeper’s hands, landing at the feet of a Clayton Ridge forward who had an open net in front of her. Regulation ended tied at one apiece.
It didn’t take long for Decorah to score the winner in overtime when just two minutes in, the Vikes had another corner kick that again was deflected two or three times in the box. This time Amelia Dugger was in the right place at the right time and sent the game-winner home from the top of the penalty area.
“Our girls did better this game in possession but need to play with more composure and have more of a killer instinct going to goal. I thought we should have scored once, if not twice more, given the chances we produced. It was nice to see the girls get a victory after some difficult games recently,” said Coach Loren Hendrickson.
Decorah is at Union Thursday, May 4, at 4 p.m., then competes at the Waverly-Shell Rock tournament Saturday, May 6, at 9 a.m., against Iowa City Regina. Game two will be against Bondurant-Farrar at 12 p.m.
The Vikes will host North Fayette Valley Monday, May 8, at 6:30 p.m.
