Epworth edge Vikings 49-46

By Becky Walz,

Despite a strong offensive effort, the Decorah boys’ basketball team (1-1) suffered a loss Friday, falling to Western Dubuque, Epworth (1-1) on the road 49-46.
Neither squad started the game on fire, taking over two minutes to put the first points on the board. Despite taking an early lead, the Vikes trailed, 13-11. The score was still close at halftime as the teams went into the locker room with Western Dubuque leading 22-19. Decorah pulled within one in the third period and took a 37-34 lead in the fourth quarter with 6:00 to play. The Vikies continued to lead 42-41 three minutes later; however, the Bobcats battled back for the win in the closing minutes.
“We came out a big flat and give Western Dubuque credit, they made plays when they needed to and we didn’t. We also had problems securing defensive rebounds which resulted in too many offensive possessions for WD. You can’t lose the battle on the glass and expect to win many games,” said Coach Jonathan Carlson.
Joe Bockman was hot from the floor, connected for 16 points. Knocking down eight points was Trey McCain. On the board with six points apiece were Noah Storts and Ben Bockman.
The Vikings are home Friday, Dec. 10, against Charles City, beginning at 8 p.m. Decorah will battle Wapsie Valley Saturday, Dec. 11, on the Upper Iowa University courts at 3:30 p.m.
