By Becky Walz,
Missed blocking assignments and a penalties turned out to be the undoing of the South Winn football team Friday night as the Warriors (1-2, 1-2) fell at home to Clayton Ridge (2-1, 1-0) in the opening game of district play, 7-0.
A little flat
Both teams hit the gridiron with little momentum as the game remained scoreless through three quarters. It was finally a 22-yard pass play from Caleb Helle to Boston Pierce that Clayton Ridge put up the first and only score of the game in the fourth period.
“We had a hard time getting in rhythm on offense. Clayton Ridge did a good job of forcing us on the perimeter in the run game,” said Coach Jason Ohrt.
Stats sheet
Offensively, the Warriors rushed for all 141 yards of their offense, led by Sam Conway who average 7.7 yards a touch, totaling 69 yards. Logan Hageman had 16 carries for 48 yards, while Evan Bushman had eight touches for 28 yards.
“Brody Tieskoetter and Parker Timp provided a spark defensively. I was very proud how they carried themselves the entire contest being only sophomores. The effort and opportunity are there for us offensively; we just need more consistent assignment execution. Defensively, I feel we are playing well enough to win,” added Coach Ohrt.
Conway was the leader on defense as well with nine solo tackles with two for a loss. In for four solo stops and two assists apiece were Tieskoetter and Ethan Timp, while P. Timp had three solo tackles and two assists. Landon Garcia recovered one fumble for the Warriors.
