Final period forces TV boys out of postseason

By Becky Walz,

While the late stops were there, the critical shots in the closing minutes of Thursday’s district semifinal would not fall as the Turkey Valley boys’ basketball team dropped the contest, 47-42, to Maquoketa Valley.
The Trojans went to the free throw line just four times and converted all four. Turkey Valley ended the year with a record of 14-8 while Maquoketa Valley improved to 16-7 and advanced to the district final Tuesday, Feb. 21, versus No. 2 North Linn.

“The guys left it all on the court. I told the boys we had to be good to advance and we were. Our 10 turnovers in this game are much improved from Monday’s game. I really enjoyed the seniors with four years, I have been with them as they worked hard and will be missed,” said John Izer.
Calvin Bodensteiner broke the ice for the Trojans in the first with an old-fashion three point play on a shot and free throw. TV went on to finish the opening period with an 11-5 advantage. In the second, TV led by as many as six with the Wildcats hitting a trey at the buzzer to cut it to 27-24 in favor of the Trojans at the half. TV maintained the advantage in the third, with the final quarter going to the home team.
With 14 points and nine rebounds, Bodensteiner led TV. Three Trojans contributed seven points apiece including Chase Hayek, Caleb Kurtenbach and Oliver Schmitt. Senior Noah Hanson grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds, while Carson Busta had two big blocks in the first half.
Set to graduate for the Trojans are Carson Busta, Noah Hanson, Calvin Bodensteiner and Chase Hayek.
