The South Winn volleyball team (9-17, 5-1 UIC) faced off with Clayton Ridge (12-13, 4-1 UIC) in a battle for league standings in the UIC on Tuesday evening in Calmar.
The Warriors came up just shy on the evening dropping a highly contested first set 24-26 with no team having more than a two-point lead. In the second set, the Warriors played their most consistent volleyball of the net jumping out to an early lead and not looking back, winning 25-16. Unfortunately, Clayton Ridge regained the momentum and walked away with the four set victory (21-25, 22-25).
“We knew going in this would be a back-and-forth match for us, and unfortunately we gave up some runs in sets three and four that we just couldn’t overcome. Our girls played extremely hard, and the moment got a bit too big for us at times. Playing in these meaningful late season games is something they have made a goal of, and they look forward to the opportunities again next week,” said Coach Alex Smith.
Katrina Hageman led the way with 10 kills, 12 digs, five aces and was 19-for-23 in serving. Senior Morgan Kleve also had 10 kills to go with three digs, three aces and a 13-for-15 serving performance. With nine kills and 10 digs was Abby Wagner. She also was 14-for-16 at the service line. Avery Luzum dished out 15 assists and was 12-for-15 in serving, while Hailey Riehle had 13 assists and was 15-for-16 with two aces.
South Winn has two conference games still on tap before the postseason begins. The Warriors will be at Central Elkader (11-20, 4-1 UIC) Tuesday, Oct. 11, and will host Dig Pink Night with Turkey Valley (10-15, 4-1 UIC) Thursday, Oct. 13.
