First five possessions lead to scores for Vikes

By Becky Walz,

It was time to get back in the win column Friday as the Decorah football team (2-2, 0-0) scored in each of its first five possessions to defeat an old conference rival, Charles City on the road 35-6,
“We played well in the first half and executed in our passing game and on defense well,” said Coach Pat Trewin.

How it happened
The Vikings got going when Tyler plunged three yards to put Decorah on the board in the first quarter. The senior added a second three-yard carry later in the opening period to hand the Vikings a 14-0 lead.
In the second period, Tyler went to the air, connecting with Zach Jermier for a five-yard TD pass. Calling out the signals, Tyler hit Joseph Bockman on a five-yard pass to the second score of the quarter. Decorah’s scoring concluded with Jacob Pipho hauling in a reception for a 43-yard touchdown.
The Decorah defense kept the Comets out of the end zone until the final period that saw Charles City drive 74 yards in 16 plays.

Those numbers
Decorah produced 279 yards and held Charles City to 83.
Four Vikings carried the ball, led by Tyler with nine touches for 76 yards. Jaden Baker added seven carries for 17 yards, while Dane Frieden moved the ball 21 yards in his five attempts. Through the air it was Noah Storts who led the way with five receptions for 68 yards. Jacob Pipho caught one pass for 43 yards.
Defensively it was Trysten Finholt and Brayden Reiser with five total tackles apiece. Carson Wemark had for assisted tackles.
“Keenan Tyler passed the ball well going 11-12 for 140 yards and 3 TD’s. We rush the ball better than we had for a while gaining over 140 yards with four different guys carrying the load,” said Coach Trewin. “Defensively, we played well holding them to 30 yards rushing and not allowing any big plays in the passing game or on special teams.”

Time to celebrate
“We play Mason City for homecoming this week. It is also the start of district play and we want to come out and play well. We would love to see a big homecoming crowd to help lift us. Mason City has a few big play type players. They have a couple of strong and aggressive linemen and some receivers that can catch the deep pass. We will need to be on top of our game to get the victory,” noted Coach Trewin.
Decorah will be home this Friday, Sept. 24, as the Vikings celebrate homecoming versus Mason City at 7:30 p.m.
