By Becky Walz,
And then there were five.
The South Winn wrestling team will have five wrestlers looking to continue the dream of a state title Saturday after each finished in the top two of their weight class at the Class 1A Sectional 4 Saturday at Clarksville.
Tony Greve (220) won a sectional title, while Aiden Feickert (106), Ethan Maldonado (132), Collin Holm (138) and Logan Hageman (195) earned spots as the runners-up to all advance to the district meet Saturday, Feb. 12, at Denver, at 11 a.m. Each will have the goal of finishing in the top two at districts to earn a spot at the state meet.
As a team, the Warriors finished second overall with 175.5 points. Nashua-Plainfield won the meet with 240 points. Making the regional duals were Nashua-Plainfield and Columbus Catholic.
“We did not make it to regional duals this season, which is pretty disappointing. The kids really worked hard and had that as one of their team goals. We only lost two duals all season to Class 1A opponents and were able to finish second in the toughest sectional. I think there needs to be some changes on how the state sets this up, but it shouldn’t be put into the Class 1A coaches to decide who moves on or not, based off of the Iowa Wrestling Coaches Association Rankings. It is a highly debated topic, but there just aren’t enough coaches who do the homework it takes to make these accurate.
The mighty five
Maldonado, Hageman and Greve have all competed in district competition before, while Feickert and Holm will be challenged in their first.
At 106 pounds, Feickert needed just two wins to move on. He received a bye in the quarterfinals, then pinned Mariah Michels of Saint Ansgar in 55 seconds. In the finals he was pinned in 1:59 by Nashua-Plainfield’s Jayden Rinken. He didn’t need to compete in a wrestle back for second because he had already defeated Michels. Feickert is 32-12 this season and will wrestle Lucas Oldenkamp (38-6) of Lake Mills in the first round.
At 29-10 third season, No. 8 Maldonado threw Stroker Koop of North Butler-Clarksville in 1:14 in the quarterfinal. He won a 13-6 decision in the semifinal over Kaden Wilken of Nashua-Plainfield to advance to the final. There No. 7 Joe Ebaugh of Denver won a 4-0 decision and Maldonado finished second by rule over Wilken in the wrestle back. Maldonado’s first district match will be against Brock Mathers (27-4) of Central Springs.
Sophomore Collin Holm opened the day with a throw of Kooper Tweite of Riceville in 2:58 in the quarterfinal. Advancing to the semifinal, Holm secured an 18-2 tech fall over Jonathan Hackett of Columbus. Moving into the final, Holm suffered a 5-1 decision defeat to No. 8 Trey Nelson of Nashua-Plainfield and bypassed the wrestle back by rule. Holding just a 5-2 record, Holm will square off with No. 2 Clayton McDonough (47-0) of Central Springs.
Hageman advance by finishing second as well at 195 pounds. He opened his day with a fall in 1:08 over Jackson Zwanziger of Nashua-Plainfield. It was a battle through the final period with No. 9 Columbus’ Mason Knipp that went in Hageman’s favor 7-6. No. 10 Kolben Miller of North Butler-Clarksville then bested Hageman by a 15-6 major decision in the final. However, Hageman advanced the no contest rule in the wrestle back. With a 23-4 record, Hageman will do battle with Holden Hensley (37-8) of Newman Catholic.
Greve was the lone sectional champion of the day and needed just two wins for the title at 220 pounds. A quarterfinal bye sent the senior into the semifinal with Landon Pratt of Nashua-Plainfield where he won by a 5-0 decision. In the final Greve put Connor Knudtson of Columbus on his back in 4:43. Greve enters the district meet with a 34-6 record and will face Rockford’s Marshal Schlader (26-12).
Parting thoughts
“The sectional tournament is always an unpredictable day. We talk about how there will be ups and downs throughout it and to just leave everything you have out on the mat each time you compete. I think for the most part our kids did that. We had some great battles and came out on both the winning and losing end of those. Ten of our 14 kids placed in the top four and that is pretty impressive considering this sectional tournament is probably the deepest sectional in the state as far as the number of quality wrestlers in each bracket,” said Coach Elsbernd. “It is always hard seeing some of our kids lose and their season come to an end, especially our seniors, who have been with us for so many years. But it is also exciting to see the kids who are able to win and move on. It takes a lot of sacrifices and determination to succeed in this sport and watching it all come together and work out for the kids is pretty special.”
