Eleven Warriors placed in the top five Saturday, as the South Winn boys’ wrestling team competed at the Doug Guilford tournament, hosted by Starmont, in the final match of year 2023.
It turned out to be a good day for the Warriors, who crowned four champions and had one grappler finish as the runner-up.
“I think we are continuing to improve and I am able to see guys making key adjustments, which is helping. Our seniors are really leading the way this year, they are providing great leadership in the practice room and are setting the tone for us in competition. We will have a nice break until January and it will allow us to reflect on the first half of the season and continue working on some areas. We hope to have everyone back in the lineup by that time, which will make us even stronger,” said Coach Jacob Elsbernd.
The first to make the top of the podium was 113-pound Aiden Feickert, ranked No. 12 in Class 1A, who received a quarterfinal bye to move directly into the semifinals against Waukon’s Trent Murphy. The SW senior pinned his way to the finals in 3:47. It was a 4-2 decision over Kale Berinobis of Waukon that led Feickert to the title.
Collin Holm also received a quarterfinal bye at 144 pounds. The Class 1A No. 2 ranked matman threw Garrison Byrnes of Waukon in 2:30 to advance to the final where Holm took the win by an 8-0 major decision over Jesup’s Dawson Bell.
At 165 pounds, Kyle Kuboushek won gold, throwing Marco Avila of Riceville in 5:54 in the quarterfinals. The Class1A No. 9 sophomore edged Jesup’s Wyatt VanderWerff by a 3-2 decision in the semifinal to keep his day alive. By a 9-3 decision, Kuboushek won the title over Mason Maschmann of BGM.
It was three falls and done for Parker Timp. Competing at 215 pounds, the senior threw Kaden Liles of Monticello in the quarterfinals and proceeded to pin Durant’s Nicholas Poston in 2:42 in the semifinals. It took the Class 1A No. 12 wrestler 4:26 to turn Skyler Blad of Jesup in the final to become the champion.
Also in the finals was 150-pound Landen Schnuelle. Throwing Jack Gericke of East Buchanan in 1:06, the sophomore moved on the semifinal round against Oelwein’s Regan McKeeman. There Schnuelle picked up a 9-0 major decision to advance to the final against Keaton Moeller of Starmont. Class 1A top-ranked Moeller was too much for Schnuelle in the final as the SW grappler fell by way of a 10-0 major decision to finish runner-up.
The Warriors will enjoy a holiday break before returning to competition Thursday, Jan. 4, for the Upper Iowa Conference team dual tournament, hosted by North Fayette Valley at 4 p.m.
