Fourth quarter dooms Vikes

By Becky Walz,

After keeping pace with Prairie du Chien for three quarters, the final period was just too much for the Decorah girls’ basketball team (0-2, 0-0 NEIC) as the Vikes fell, 69-50, Tuesday at home.
The Vikings opened the contest with the momentum, leading 16-12 midway through the first period before the Blackhawks rallied to tie the score 16-all. Prairie du Chien swung the energy in their favor in the second quarter, keeping Decorah off the board for the first two minutes. At halftime, the two squads were all tied up again at 30-30.
While the Red and Blue managed to continue to keep pace through the third period, the Vikes trailed 49-44 with eight minutes to go and that is when the Blackhawks took control. Prairie du Chien outscored the home team 20-6 in the final period to knock off the Vikings.
“We played a solid three quarters of basketball. Unfortunately, we ran out of gas in the fourth quarter which led to turnovers and Prairie du Chien was able to capitalize with easy buckets,” said Coach Shannon Quandahl. “Overall, I was pleased with our performance and am looking forward to Friday’s game.”
Yazmeen Whitsitt had the hot hand with 21 points for Decorah with Bryar Duwe pouring in 15. Kylie O’Hara was on the board with eight. Adding five points was Brynn Storhoff and Sami Mount provided three.
The Decorah girls cross into Minnesota Friday, Dec. 3, to battle Spring Grove at 7:30 p.m.
