Fourth-ranked Vikings fall to W-SR, 3-1

By Becky Walz,

In a battle for the early lead in the Northeast Iowa Conference standing, the fourth-ranked Decorah volleyball team (10-2, 1-1 NEIC) traveled to No. 9 Waverly-Shell Rock (13-8, 2-0 NEIC) Tuesday falling 3-1.
The Go-Hawks opened up set one to a 7-3 lead over the Vikings; however, little-by-little Decorah got back in the contest and eventually took a slim 11-10 lead when Dahlyn Headington went on a five-serve run. The rest of the game was a back-and-forth pendulum with neither NEIC squad leading by more than two with Waverly-Shell Rock coming out on top 27-25.

Decorah came out strong in set two and built a 9-4 lead that the Vikings never gave up. A string of five serves by Leah Holland kept the visitors out from 20-13 late in the game, before the Go-Hawks battled back, but it was too little, too late as Decorah took set two 25-23.
Sets three and four were close at the beginning before long serve runs propelled Waverly-Shell Rock ahead to win 25-13 and 25-19.
“Set one was crucial. We had dug ourselves a hole but completely fought back into the set and had chances to win it, we feel we let that one get away,” said Coach Gina Holthaus. “I was proud of our girls for coming back and getting set two. In sets three and four we dug ourselves in a hole and had to fight the entire set to get back into it. This was a tough loss, but we have some takeaways and things that we want to get better at, and we will keep improving.”
Unofficial stats from the match had Amelia Dugger with 12 kills and Haley Gossman with 10, while Maddy Fromm handed out 11 assists and Emma Wold had nine. Lani Hubka provided nine digs.
