Free throws, foul trouble hinder Vikings at state tourney

By Becky Walz,

There still has been no boys’ basketball team in Winneshiek County to win a game at the state tournament.
Seeded second entering the Class 3A tournament, the top-ranked Decorah Vikings were forced to play from behind for all of Tuesday’s quarterfinal versus Central-De Witt (19-6). In the end, foul trouble with several key players, combined with the inability to convert on free throws proved costly as Decorah lost, 67-59.

The Viking squad still made history as only the third team in school history to qualify for the state tournament, the first in 45 years, finishing with a 22-2 record — the most wins in the record books.
