Game point goes to Trojans

By Becky Walz,

Momentum was the name of the game Tuesday night in Jackson Junction as the Turkey Valley volleyball team (9-11, 2-1 UIC) hosted South Winn (7-18, 1-3 UIC).
With the excitement of homecoming week in the air, the Trojans took the air out of the gym in three sets — 25-11. 25-25 and 25-12.

Trojan highlights
“Wow what a great night, we crowned Dylan Reicks as Homecoming King and the enthusiasm in the gym was incredible. The girls came to play and play they did!” commented Trojan co-coaches Tammy Vrzak and Jackie Novotny. “Jacqlyn Schmitt and Kourtney Schmidt had stellar games tonight all around. The girls really came together to play a great match.”
Adriana Tiedt and Jacqlyn Schmitt pounded out nine kills apiece. Tiedt added 15 digs and had a 16-for-21 serving mark with four aces, while Schmitt had eight digs, two solo blocks and was 13-for-13 at the service stripe. Kourtney Schmidt added another eight kills, eight digs and was 12-for-14 in serving. Dishing out 30 assists was Josie Weber, while Halle Weber led the team with 24 digs.

Warrior numbers
The Warriors were led by Abby Wagner with six kills, Ali Heying 11 assists, and Eryn Luzum and Katrina Hageman both with 14 digs.
“We knew going into tonight we would face an opponent that would be fired up to play us and we couldn’t get much going early and dug ourselves a hole we couldn’t get out of. Playing two of the upper level teams in our league on back to back nights present challenges, and unfortunately we got exposed in some areas that I felt we were making some progress in,” said SW coach Alex Smith. “We look forward to taking a step back from competition and practicing over the next week as we prepare for the stretch run of conference play.”

Next dates
The Trojans will take a bus ride to Monona Thursday, Sept. 30, to take on the Bulldogs of MFL MarMac at 7:30 p.m. Next week TV hosts North Fayette Valley Tuesday, Oct. 5, at 7:30 p.m.
The South Winn JV and varsity squads have a week between competitions as South Winn won’t play host to Kee High until Tuesday, Oct. 5, at 7:30 p.m., as the Warriors celebrate Senior Night. The freshmen will compete at the Sumner-Fred tournament Saturday, Oct. 2, at 9 a.m.
