It was two games in two days for the Decorah girls’ basketball team (9-5, 6-2 NEIC) with the Vikes claiming a conference road win over New Hampton and falling to Beckman Catholic.
NEIC victory
Decorah took control of Friday’s conference match-up with New Hampton (4-9, 3-4 NEIC), besting the Chickasaws, 39-26.
It took several minutes for either squad to get on the board, but when the Vikings took off, the offense began to roll with a 10-8 first period advantage. Decorah’s defense held the Chickasaws to four points in the second quarter as the Red and Blue claimed a 22-12 lead at the break. The Vikes outscored NH 13-3 in the third to lead 35-15 with eight minutes to play.
Bryar Duwe led the way with 10 points for Decorah. Abigail Milburn scored eight, while Kylie O’Hara put in eight.
Non-conference
It was a close contest throughout as the Vikes fell to Beckman (6-9) in non-conference action, 49-39, at home Saturday.
“This was a good competitive game for us. We need games like this so we understand the importance of maintaining focus and engagement with each possession,” said Coach Shannon Quandahl. “We continue to get 1% better with each game so we are ready for regional play.”
At the end of the first quarter, the Vikes trailed 13-12. Decorah fell behind further in the second period, trailing 27-22 at the break. An even 12-point third period for both squads left the Vikes trailing by five with eight minutes remaining.
Nierengarten had a big game for the Vikes, scoring 14 points. Duwe dropped in 13. Haley Gossman contributed seven, while O’Hara had five.
