Grimstad medals twice at state

By Becky Walz,

A quartet of Decorah boys capped off a strong season Saturday at the state swim meet at Linn-Mar in Cedar Rapids, scoring 30 points and seeing senior Gus Grimstad climb onto the podium twice.

In the team race, the overall champion was Waukee with 268.5 points.

The boys showed up and swam well. It was a nice end to a unique swim season,” said Coach Laura Storlie.

Swimming for the third time in the 100 butterfly at state, Grimstad bested his 2020 eighth-place finish by touching the wall in 50.26 seconds in fourth place, shaving off a second from his seed time of 51.40 seconds. The senior added to his success this season with an eighth-place finish in the 200 individual medley, stopping the clock at 1:55.58, nearly four seconds better than his 1:55.88 seed time.

Also scoring points for the Vikings was the 200 medley relay team of Drew Chamberlain, Isaac Knaack, Grimstad and Ryan Lubahn. The foursome finished the race in 1:40.13 in 15th place to earn four team points.

Chamberlain was a two-time individual competitor, swimming the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle. The junior ended the season in 27th place in the shorter event, in 1:49.86, while posting a time of 5:04.73 in the 500 freestyle.

The only other event in the water Saturday was the 400 free relay — the same quartet from the 200 medley relay — finishing the race in 3:23.38, good for 21st place.

The Vikes will have a pair of key roles to fill next year with graduation of two seniors — Gus Grimstad and Ryan Lubahn.
