It was the same teams, same score and same result as the Viking girls soccer team (6-8) hosted West Delaware (1-14) for the second time in four days in first-round Class 1A Region 8 Monday in Decorah.
The Vikings advanced to the regional quarterfinals against No. 10 Hudson (10-2) Wednesday, May 17, after the printing of the Public Opinion. A recap of the game will be available in the May 23 Driftless Journal.
Decorah dominated from the kickoff, scoring after only 15 seconds had elapsed. The game was played almost entirely in the Viking half of the pitch, and Decorah took advantage of it to score seven goals in the first half and three in the second half. The game was then called via the mercy rule.
“The only thing I had to say to the girls at half time was that we let at least three golden chances to score go begging.  The further we go in the playoffs, misses like that could come back to haunt us,” said Coach Loren Hendrickson.
Scoring three goals each for Decorah were Kylie O’Hara and Grace Neal. Ellen Rooney had two goals, one of which was a well-placed penalty kick. Wrapping up the scoring with a goal apiece were Bella Bishop and Gabrielle Dixon. There were five assists dished out by four players, two of which were beautiful through-balls by Sara Johanningmeier which led to two of Kylie O’Hara’s goals. The other assists were credited to Bella Bishop, Ella Grouws and Gabrielle Dixon.
