By Becky Walz,
Coming off a big win over Waukon a week ago, the Decorah football team (1-2) were hoping to keep rolling in non-district action as it hosted West Delaware Friday night. However, the speed of the Hawks proved to be a challenge as the visitors scored in each quarter for the 42-6 win.
“West Delaware is a big and talented team. Their play and physicality were excellent,” said Coach Pat Trewin. “We did not play our best. They mixed some things up within both their defensive and offensive schemes and we did not adjust well. We plan to learn from this and work hard to improve.”
Scoring moments
West Delaware got on the board twice in the first quarter on a 14-yard sprint and a 2-yard plunge for the 14-0 lead. The visitors added two more touchdowns in the second, one in the third and one in the fourth while keeping the Vikings to limited opportunities.
It was deep into the fourth period before Brady Stille connected with Kelley Gates for a 50-yard touchdown to give Decorah its lone score of the contest.
A quick peek
The Vikings had 52 yards rushing and 78 through the air for 130 total.
West Delaware collected 514 yards overall, with 388 on the ground.
Stille was 4-for-14 passing for the 78 yards and a touchdown. Gates was the big target on the touchdown, with Ben Wymer, Kaiden Quandahl and Casey Brickley all hauling in a reception apiece.
On the ground, Tate Johnson picked up 16 yards on two carries while Erik Hjelle had 13 yards on eight carries.
Leading the defense was Wymer with nine solo and five assisted tackles. Stille made five solo stops while Brady Benzing had two solo and six assisted tackles.
“I thought Ben Wymer had a very good game. His play on special teams, running of the football and tackling were excellent,” noted Coach Trewin. “Our younger players got a feel for a team that can play with this much physicality and speed. We can and need to get to that level.”
Back on track
The Vikings will celebrate homecoming Friday, Sept. 16, as Charles City visits Decorah for a 7:30 p.m. kick-off.
“We know that we can play much better and have a great group who are eager to work hard, learn and grow,” concluded Coach Trewin.
