Hoffert finishes 24th at regional final

By Becky Walz,

Turkey Valley senior Ali Hoffert closed out her high school golfing career with an appearance at the Class 1A Regional Golf Final held Monday, May 24, at the Mason City Country Club. The hot, humid weather was compounded by windy conditions throughout much of the day.
When the day was over, Hoffert placed right in the middle of the pack with a 24th place finish in the field of 44 girls that competed. The senior fired rounds of 51 and 58 for a 109 total. Perennial power Bishop Garrigan ran away with the team title with a 350, 59 strokes better than Saint Ansgar who shot a 409 on the day. The low medalist from Garrigan fired a 38-40 for a round of 78.
“Though Ali was clearly not on her ‘A’ game for much of the day, she battled her way around the tough course and finished strong. The tree-lined course was very narrow, and if you did not drive it straight you were in ‘scramble mode’ all the way to the green,” said Coach John Reicks.
Hoffert narrowly missed a hole-in-one by inches on the short par three when her tee shot just trickled past the hole. Another highlight was when she chipped in for a par while well off the putting surface three holes later. The sun and warm temperatures were very draining and a lot of the girls, including Ali, were very tired by the end of the day.
“Turkey Valley will greatly miss Hoffert, along with fellow seniors Kylie Wurzer, Emma Hanson and Raegan Kime. The seniors fashioned the backbone of the girls’ golf team that won the UIC golf title for the first time since 2008. The Lady Trojans missed by a scant one stroke a chance to compete as a team at the regional final,” concluded Coach Reicks. “Overall, it was a very successful season for the Lady Trojans, especially considering where we were just a year ago.”
