Playing in games back-to-back days, the South Winn boys’ basketball team (7-4, 5-3 UIC) split the games over the weekend with Clayton Ridge and Don Bosco.
On the road
Playing short-handed and falling prey to foul issues, the Warriors were in a hole they couldn’t dig out of against Clayton Ridge (6-4, 6-2 UIC) Friday night, dropping the UIC contest, 70-54.
“The boys played hard all night, but we turned the ball over 19 times, and against a team like Clayton Ridge you’re not going win a lot when that happens,” admitted Coach Derek Taylor.
After the first eight minutes on the floor, the Warriors fell behind 12-9 and allowed the Eagle offense to double their efforts in the second period to lead 37-23 at the break. Clayton Ridge kept the pressure on in the second half to take the win.
Leading the Warriors on the floor with 16 points, three rebounds and three assists was junior Keagen Streeter. Trey Kriener recorded a double-double with 11 points and 14 boards.

Winter Classic
Stepping out of the UIC, the Warriors rallied back Saturday in the Winter Classic at Upper Iowa University in Fayette to best Don Bosco (2-8), 61-46.
“We are getting healthy and started finding our rhythm back after a slow start to the new year. We made a few adjustments to our defense and dialed up the pressure which generated a lot of transition buckets. We had four guys score in double figures and had a lot of production from our guards tonight which I hope continues for the rest of the season. I am especially proud of Kole Hageman, the sophomore played his best game of the year and I hope it’s a building block for things to come from him,” said Coach Taylor.
In double digits for SW were Carson Wenthold, Keagen Streeter, Trey Kriener and Kole Hageman. Wenthold was active on the floor with 17 points, seven steals and four assists, while Streeter ended the night with 12 points and five boards. Kriener provided 11 points and five rebounds and Hageman had 10 points and five steals.
