By Becky Walz,

The opportunity was there, but the South Winn football team (0-1) couldn’t seize the chance Friday night, falling to Starmont (1-0) in the opener, 15-14.
“We had our chances. Pre-snap penalties and ball security ended drives and hurt field position for us. The effort was there, but the execution at times was not on par with what we are capable of,” said Coach Jason Ohrt. “Starmont gave us the physical test we needed to get ready for district play starting next week. It will be important for us to get off to a cleaner start and to finish stronger than we did in the second half going forward.”
Oh so close
The Stars struck first, marching down the field to the one-yard line and plunging over the goal line in the first period. The second quarter belonged the Warriors however, with Braiden Todd throwing a 24-yard strike to fellow sophomore Carson Streeter, then finishing a drive with a three-yard carry of the pigskin to give South Winn a 14-7 lead at the break.
In the third it was a 41-yard carry by the Stars combined with a successful two-point conversion pass that was the downfall for the Warriors as South Winn failed to reach the end zone again to regain the lead.

Starmont had 195 yards on the ground and 67 through the air, while the Warriors picked up 116 on the ground and 64 through the air in the evenly-matched contest.
