With the regular season over it is time for the Decorah bowling teams to focus on the postseason and they got off to a good start Wednesday as the runners-up at the North Central Conference bowling tournament at Cadillac Lanes in Waterloo, hosted by Columbus Catholic.

In boys’ action, the Vikes qualified as the No. 2 seed following 10 baker games of 190, 189, 215, 259, 240, 174, 236, 218, 201 and 223. In the first round of the brackets, Decorah met No. 7 seed Forest City beating the 167-147 and 205-183 to advance to the second round against Oelwein. It was there that the Vikes picked up the 2-1 victory with games of 195-210, 204-177 and 186-177. Pushing its way into the final, Decorah faced Charles City. The Vikings dropped the first game 174-220, before battling back to win game two 202-147 setting up a tie-breaker. By seven pins, Decorah lost the finale 193-186.
Gavin Sims led the boys’ team in the anchor spot all day and threw countless strikes during the daylong event, including 13 in a row to start. Others competing for Decorah were Brody Anfinson, Will Marx, Grady Brauer, Daniel Skrade and Cade Averhoff, with Easton Luzum in the reserve spot.
Bowling their way to a No. 3 seed, the Viking girls completed baker games with scores of 175, 182, 137, 154, 160, 149, 177, 191, 190 and 147. On the lanes first against Decorah was Waukon for the 195-159 and 157-114 win. In the semifinal, the Vikes squared off with Columbus for a 2-0 victory, defeating the hosts 128-125 and 191-155. Facing Tripoli for the title, Decorah fell short, 168-149 and 171-155.
On the lanes for the girls were Grace Gerleman, Paige Lange, Rebecca Bruening, Lily Iverson, Sydney Hageman and Hannah Schnitzler with Anika Grinna as the reserve.

State qualifying
The Vikings will look to qualify for state Tuesday, Feb. 15, as Decorah steps on the lanes at the May City Bowl in Cedar Rapids. Decorah is in Class 2A and will compete in the Xavier district, along with Cedar Rapids Washington, Charles City (girls), Clinton, Independence (boys), Marion, Waterloo East, Western Dubuque and Xavier.
The first-place team from each district automatically advances to state. Athletes can also advance as an individual as the top eight scores from each site qualify for the state individual tournament for a total of 32 qualifiers.
