“First off, we want to thank all the staff at Luther College for their excellent facilities, their staff and for all the work in setup and tear down. We were fortunate to hold our inaugural South Winn Girls Wrestling Tournament at Luther and look forward to what the future holds. Thanks to our SW administration, namely Alex Smith, for all the work that went into setting this up. And thank you to all the parents who helped set up, work, and tear down. Thank you,” said Coach Ethan Adams.
On the mat, the Warriors competed well. Several girls wrestled their best matches of the season.
At 190 pounds, Izzy Kipp bested her lone opponent Kylie Vance of Nashua-Plainfield to win the title, pinning the Husky wrestler twice. In round one, Kipp threw Vance in 1:13 and later won by fall in 28 seconds.
South Winn had two wrestlers finish third.
Wrestling at 115 pounds, senior Josie Hageman had a busy night, going 5-1. Hageman pinned her opening opponent, Amberley Gerholdt in 35 seconds. In the quarterfinal, she was turned to her back in 3:37 by Osage’s Jalynn Goodale, then had to fight her way back through the bracket. In the second round of consolations, Hageman pinned Oelwein’s Emmah Hoveland in 21 seconds to advance against Ryan Reams of Nashua-Plainfield in the third round of consolations where she picked up the fall in 1:50. In the consolation semifinal, Hageman earned a 2-0 decision over Sierra Hansmeier of Crestwood. She finished the night against Dulce Lopez of Postville and picked up an 8-0 major decision to secure third place.
Kaydn Meyer (125) went 3-1 for the night with pins over Melody Grimm of MFL MarMac in 1:34, Zoey Johnson of Osage in 5:07 and Kaylie Havig of Osage in 2:42. Her only loss of the night came in the semifinal to Waverly-Shell Rock’s Eva Heise by fall in 38 seconds.
“It is hard for some of our newer wrestlers to see progress when wins aren’t coming, but we have several girls who are absolutely getting better, and our coaches couldn’t be prouder of their effort. They worked hard all night and have great heads on their shoulders. We are very fortunate with this group. We executed well and are bringing good things to the mat technically. Our leaders are also making strides, and as a group we are buying into what is asked of us on a day to day basis. I’m proud to work with these young women,” added Coach Adams.
