It came down to the final possession in overtime Tuesday as the Decorah girls’ basketball team (7-5, 3-1 NEIC) dropped a close non-conference game to West Delaware (5-9) at home, 52-51.
Holding on to a 29-19 lead at halftime, Decorah looked to be in control of Tuesday’s game; however, the Hawks stormed back in the second half to tie the game in the closing minutes to force overtime. It was there that the visitors clinched the one-point victory.
“We had plenty of opportunities to put the game away, but overall, this was a good learning experience. We have to be in these types of games to understand the importance of maintaining discipline in competitive situations,” said Coach Shannon Quandahl.
The hot hand went to Bryar Duwe with 18 points, while Haley Gossman was also in double figures with 13. Just missing the double digits with nine points was Yazmeen Whitsitt.
The Vikes host Crestwood Friday, Jan. 21, at 6:45 p.m., then hit the road for a non-conference game at Dyersville Beckman Saturday, Jan. 22, at 5:30 p.m. Next week kicks off with another non-conference tussle as Decorah hosts Denver Tuesday, Jan. 25, at 6:30 p.m.
