Lady Warriors cruise past Postville

By Becky Walz,

With a 4-0 conference record, the South Winn softball team (5-3 overall) is one of three teams sitting at the top of the UIC after taking two games from Postville Monday. The Warriors added another tally to the win column with a non-conference victory over Nashua-Plainfield Tuesday.

Sweeping the Pirates
The Lady Warriors took care of business early Monday, defeating Postville (0-4, 0-4 UIC) on the road, 13-0 and 18-5.
While in the pitcher’s circle for only three innings, SW junior Eryn Luzum threw a no-hitter with six strikeouts for the win. Offensively, the Warriors pounded out 13 hits included triples by Mary Frana and Alison Heying. Luzum helped her cause with a pair of doubles and two RBI.
South Winn ran away with game two as well with a pair of seven-run frames in the third and fourth to finish the game early once again. This time the Warriors connected for 16 hits and had 12 stolen bases.

On the road
Stepping out of the UIC, the Warriors finished Tuesday’s contest strong with a 10-run seventh to take the game from Nashua-Plainfield (2-9) 13-7.
“Our top of the order had a great night. We had a few base-running mistakes and ran out of a couple innings early, but adjusted well to the pitching after the first time through the order. We have a lot of growing as a team to go but the girls are putting in the work to get better as a team and as individual players,” said Coach Ken Buchheit.
Striking out seven, Luzum picked up the win. Mary Frana knocked out four doubles in her five at-bats to drive in five runs for SW. Alison Heying knocked out a triple, had two RBI and had four stolen bases.
