Lady Warriors sweep Central Elkader on the road

The South Winn softball team (2-4, 2-0 UIC) picked up its first wins of the young season last week over Central Elkader and was edged in a non-conference contest with Waukon. The rain forced Saturday’s tournament at North Fayette Valley to be cancelled.

Initial wins
On the road Wednesday, South Winn utilized its offense to its full potential with a pair of wins over Central Elkader (0-3, 0-2 UIC), 9-0 and 14-8.
In game one, the Lady Warriors put together a three-run third inning, then tagged on two in the fourth and four in the sixth to secure the win.
Game two began with Central taking the first-inning lead 3-1 before South Winn plated six runs in the top of the second. Central responded with four in the bottom half of the frame to knot the score 7-7. SW pulled ahead for good in the fourth stanza with five more runs and tagged on two insurance runs in the sixth for good measure.
Eryn Luzum and Abby Wagner combined to throw the two games. Luzum recorded 18 strikeouts in her 10 innings in the pitcher’s circle while Wagner rang up five batters.
South Winn put together a night with 22 hits, including five doubles in game two by Alison Heying, Morgan Kleve, Britney Hageman, Wagner and Janessa Zweibahmer. On the base paths Heying was busy, stealing a total of eight bases, while Morgan Kriener had five stolen bases for the night.

Non-conference
Stepping out of the Upper Iowa Conference, the Warriors traveled to Waukon (1-4, 0-3 NEIC) and came up short, 3-2.
South Winn got on the board in the first inning and extended its lead to 2-0 in the top of the third frame, before the Indians got one run back in the bottom of the third. From there, the Warrior offense was shut down and allowed Waukon to score twice in the fourth to conclude the scoring in the contest.
Luzum threw all six frames, striking out six batters. Kleve tagged the ball for a double, while Kriener, Kipp, Zweibahmer and Ruthie Frana all contributed a single.

Action this week
South Winn will host North Fayette Valley Wednesday, June 8, in a varsity doubleheader at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, June 9, Nashua-Plainfield will visit Calmar for a junior varsity/varsity twinbill at 5:30 p.m.
