Linksters finish seventh in NEIC

By Becky Walz,

The New Hampton girls’ golf team won its sixth consecutive NEIC golf title Thursday with 365 points. Posting a team score of 398 Waukon was the runner-up. Decorah concluded the day in seventh.
Playing on the New Hampton Golf Course, the Vikings tallied 488, three points behind Oelwein.
“My girls played a little better than our averages but still finished seventh. We hit it more often than we would like but I believe that they count every shot and it’s more important to report the correct score than a low score, so I’m proud of how the girls handle themselves,” said Coach Scott Pierce.
The Chickasaws had the top two scorers of the day as Emma Ewert fired an 80, ahead of Lydia Olson’s 92.
Decorah’s best linkster was Annika Lensch with a 108 total (54-54). Fellow senior Lexie Hauber toured the course with a 117 (59-58). Brooke Norby fashioned a 130 (70-60) while Jane Murphy was on the course with a 133 (66-67). Ending the day with a 137 (75-62) was Hope Stahl.
Six seniors took the course for the Waukon with Mia Strub (51-45) and Emily Clark (50-46) providing 96s on the Indians’ scorecard. Betsy Anderson (51-50-101), Alexis Hogan (51-54-105), Abby Shelton (52-53-105) and Margaret Wacker (61-53-114) also came through for the Indians.
Waukon competed in the first round regional competition Monday at Pleasant Valley Sports Club in Clermont, while Decorah will wait until Monday, May 24 for its lone regional meet at Waverly.
