Opening conference play, the Decorah baseball team (5-0, 3-0 NEIC) swept New Hampton (1-5, 0-4 NEIC) on the road Friday night, 5-0 and 20-10. Tuesday night, the Vikings defended their own field against Waverly-Shell Rock (3-1, 0-1 NEIC) with a 3-1 victory.
Just five games into the young season, Viking senior Cael Luzum has rung up 27 batters and leads Class 3A in strikeouts and is tied for fourth among all classes.
The Go-Hawks
Decorah walked away with a 3-1 win Tuesday against Waverly-Shell Rock and their number one pitcher.
Briggs Duwe put the momentum in the Vikings’ hands with a double in the first inning and moved around the bases with a Tyler Thompson single and a double by Keenan Tyler. Thompson also plated a run for Decorah in the opening frame to put the Vikes on top 2-0. The Go-Hawks charged back in the third with a run; however, Tyler answered the call with a solo shot over the left-centerfield fence. From there it was a pitchers’ duel with the squads getting few runners on base.
“As a team we had a number of quality team at bats early in the game to help give Cael Luzum an opportunity to pitch aggressively throughout the game. We are looking forward to continuing to improve defensively each day with more consistent physical and mental effort,” said Coach Riley.
Luzum was efficient on the mound with 11 strikeouts and allowing just two hits and walking none. Decorah had five hits in the contests.

Friday night
In game one, it took a single good inning by the Vikings to come away with the win. Decorah plated all five of its runs in the fifth. On the mound it was a dominating performance by senior Cael Luzum who recorded 16 strikeouts and gave up just one hit in seven innings of work.
Decorah’s offensive attack was highlighted with Tyler Thompson and Luzum multi-hit approaches. Thompson tapped out a double in the fifth for his two RBI.
The nightcap was a bit more entertaining as Decorah sent 12 batters to the plate in the first frame, scoring seven runs. The Chickasaws responded with five runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Decorah’s Keenan Tyler started the second inning with a solo shot over the left field fence as the Vikes padded their lead with five more runs. Thompson added a home run in the third for Decorah. New Hampton worked to cut into the lead to no avail as the Vikings rapped out six runs in the final two innings to win 20-10.
Cai Brevig got the win on the hill with three innings of work which included six strikeouts.
In all, the Vikings had 14 hits coming from eight different batters. Having multi-hit games were Thompson, Keenan Tyler, Briggs Duwe and Kyle Renken.
