Luzum’s two-run homer helps lift Vikes over W-SR

By Becky Walz,

Rallying back from a five-run deficit, the Decorah softball team (7-2, 4-0 NEIC) remained undefeated in the Northeast Iowa Conference Tuesday, besting Waverly-Shell Rock (1-7, 0-4 NEIC), 6-5.
The Go-Hawks put up the initial runs of the game with two in the third and three in the fifth. Trailing 5-0 into the bottom of the sixth, Decorah pushed five runs across home plate including a two-run home run by Ellie Luzum. The Vikings held off any W-SR threat in the top of the seventh to keep the score knotted 5-5 with one more chance to claim the win in seven innings. It was the bottom of the seventh frame when Bryar Duwe scored on a Lani Hubka fielder’s choice to take the victory.

“This was a very nice team win. We had some people playing new position and everyone stepped up to the challenge,” said Coach Jill Boyd. “We kept our composure through the whole seven innings and finally found our offensive connection in the bottom of the sixth.”
Sydney Kipp collected the win, giving up five earned runs on nine hits and five Ks.
Luzum had the two-run home run and two RBI. Bryar Duwe went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and three stolen bases.
The Vikings are at Crestwood Thursday, June 9, at 7:30 p.m., then have a break in the action until Tuesday, June 14, when they host Charles City.
