Mistakes costly in Warrior loss to Maq. Valley

By Becky Walz,

Friday night it was clear that Maquoketa Valley was the better team as the South Winn football team (0-2, 0-1) hosted the Wildcats (2-0, 1-0) in a district contest.
“We had a few mistakes on both sides of the ball to put us down 12-0 at the half. Maquoketa Valley blocked and tackled well all night and they have a special talent at the tailback position,” said Coach Jason Ohrt. “Despite the loss we had some bright spots. Kyle Kuboushek was very impressive transitioning this week to the defensive line. Parker Timp played well defensively despite dealing with a lower back injury and Keagen Streeter ran hard on offense and tackled well on defense.”

Early stumble
Maquoketa Valley gained the momentum early in the game with a 69-yard run into the end zone in the first quarter and tacked on a fumble return in the second period to hold a 12-0 halftime lead.
Back on the gridiron, South Winn took another hit giving up a touchdown on the first play of the third quarter on a 63-yard carry. The visitors kept the Warrior offense away from the end zone and tacked on three more scores before Keagen Streeter broke loose in the fourth for a 77-yard run for South Winn’s lone score of the game.
