Finally getting to play at home, the Decorah girls soccer team (1-3) fell to Independence (2-0) at home Monday night, 4-0.
The Vikes were behind 2-0 at halftime and couldn’t swing the momentum in their favor in the second half as the Mustangs scored two more times in the second half.
Decorah had just two shots on goal with one coming from Gabrielle Dixon and the other Grace Neal. Goalie Mya Redenius recorded 10 saves.
“Independence fields a team which has a group of players (now sophomores) who had played together in club soccer for many years leading up to high school and it shows. They are very disciplined, very well-trained, athletic and aggressive. The play in both halves was largely dictated by Independence,” said Coach Loren Hendrickson. “I give our girls a lot of credit for fighting to the best of their ability throughout the game. Our defense frustrated them again and again, but they were relentless. They were able to get to loose balls repeatedly, sending in crosses and taking shots. Eventually our defensive ‘dam’ broke. I think our girls learned a lot in this game, even though it was a loss.  I hope we can use this experience to make us a better team in games to come.”
Decorah will host Gladbrook-Reinbeck Thursday, April 13, at 5:30 p.m., then play at Clayton Ridge in a make-up match Monday, April 17, in Guttenberg at 6:30 p.m.
