No. 1 Vikings enter playoffs 19-1

The regular season came to an end for the Decorah boys’ basketball team Tuesday night as the Class 3A top-ranked Vikings defeated West Delaware (11-9) at home, 83-74.

The regular season came to an end for the Decorah boys’ basketball team Tuesday night as the Class 3A top-ranked Vikings defeated West Delaware (11-9) at home, 83-74.
“Our guys did a good job of getting an early lead and sustaining it. Give West Delaware credit they sure hit some tough shots and never quit,” said Coach Jonathan Carlson.
Decorah concluded the conference season with its third-straight Northeast Iowa Conference title at 10-0, with an overall record of 19-1.
The Vikings will take the first step qualifying for the state tournament Monday, Feb. 21, at home versus Crestwood in Class 3A Substate 2 at 7 p.m. A win advances Decorah into the substate semifinal versus the winner of the Iowa Falls-Alden and Charles City match on Thursday, Feb. 24, at 7 p.m., on Decorah’s home court.
The first period that proved to be the difference maker. As a sluggish start to the game quickly turned in the Vikes favor as Decorah outscored the Hawks 20-9 in the first period. West Delaware fought back in the second with 20 points; however, the Vikes continued to scorch the nets, putting in 22 of their own for a 42-29 halftime lead.
The visitors cut into the lead in the third, but it wasn’t enough to make the comeback as Decorah remained on top 63-51 with eight minutes to play. WD closed the gap to  eight with three minutes remaining before the Vikings closed out the game.
Two Vikings — Carson Wemark and Joe Bockman — were on fire from the floor, scoring 26 points apiece.
“I am proud of the way our guys finished the regular season strong and look forward to beginning the postseason Monday. We better be ready to play as Crestwood will be,” concluded Coach Carlson.
